Today I watched I Love Lucy episode 24 - Gossip. It aired on March 24, 1952.
This one had Lucy and Ethel gossiping excessively, and Ricky and Fred were not thrilled. They all made a bet to see who could go longer without gossiping. And the chaos ensues...
What struck me most was the timelessness of gossip. It was around in 1952, and it’s still around some 70-plus years later. What makes gossip so attractive?
We love to talk about other people! But why? Maybe it’s for survival—to know who we want to surround ourselves with and trust. Usually, gossip is a way to tear others down so we can feel better about ourselves. Really, what good comes from that?
Knowingly trashing someone has never made me feel better. If anything, it makes me feel energetically heavy. Plus, it’s negative karma, and we attract what we put out into the world. I want to attract good things, not drama.
I want to practice positive gossip—talking about someone’s beautiful traits instead of tearing them down. Singing their praises when they aren’t there. Lifting people up. And if I can’t say anything nice, then it goes back to the timeless saying my dad’s grandma used to say: If you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all.
Because it’s not my business, and you do you!
P.S. My favorite line from this episode was, “You cottage cheese Casanova!” Classic!
