It’s not about how many times you get knocked down; it’s how many times you get back up.
We were so excited to go on a trip recently. I couldn’t explain it, but I had this feeling that something was going to happen. And then it did - our flight was cancelled less than 12 hours before takeoff.
Ugh, there it was. The feeling I’d been having. It almost felt like a relief to have the flight cancelled and my intuition say, Ahh. It set the tone for the trip for me - that we had to be nimble and that this would be a wild ride. Fun, but wild.
We booked another flight - cancelled. We booked a third flight. This one wasn’t direct and had two plane changes. It wasn’t ideal, and the options were limited. We needed to make it work. And we did - phew! It was crazy traveling with four people, but we made it.
It just reminded me that when you keep getting knocked down, you can either lie there or get back up. Sometimes you may lie there a little longer than you want. But you eventually get back up.
The art of getting back up again after being defeated isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s like when I learned to drive a stick shift. I needed a car, and my dad gave me one. The trouble was, it didn’t have first gear…and I didn’t know how to drive a stick shift!
I couldn’t believe it, but I knew I had to find a way. I would have my boyfriend push the car, and then I practiced getting it into second gear. There were many stalls, and I almost burned out the clutch. But I learned how to drive that car through determination, tears, and a few curse words.
I feel like when I was younger, I would get knocked down and then get right back up. As I’ve gotten older, I still get knocked down, but I lie there a little longer and strategize about how to do things differently before I get back up.
Strategy helps. It does. But so does the ability to be resilient and get up again - over and over again. Because even though I’m older and wiser, I still get knocked on my ass. What I have now is the knowing that I’m a tough, resourceful gal, and I can figure it out.
Nobody gets back up better than I do. 😉
