Today I watched Episode 10, Lucy Is Jealous of Girl Singer. It aired on December 17, 1951.
In this episode, Lucy sees a blind item in the newspaper suggesting that Ricky is cheating on her with one of the new dancers in his show. Ricky tells Lucy that nothing is going on, but then Ethel puts a few ideas into her head. This sends Lucy into a tailspin, and she begins to doubt Ricky.
He reassures her that it is only a publicity story, but Lucy isn’t convinced. She ends up going to his nightclub to see for herself what is happening—and, of course, she finds her way into the show!
This got me thinking: How many times are we sure of something, only for someone to start talking to us and make us doubt what we know? Sometimes, it is not even another person. It is our own voice that starts talking and creating doubt.
Doubt. What a word. What an emotion.
It slowly eats away at our dreams and our confidence. We begin to wonder: What if? Maybe I don’t have all the facts. Maybe I am wrong. And before we know it, we begin to spiral.
What would happen if we became so centered in ourselves—and so connected to our own knowing and inner guidance—that we no longer immediately doubted ourselves?
What if Lucy had felt so secure in herself and in her relationship with Ricky that she could have checked in with her inner guidance, felt what was true, and trusted it?
I am at a place in my life where I don’t want to bow down to doubt—whether it comes from within me or is planted by someone else.
To me, doubt is worse than fear.
Fear I can give a seat to and say, “So what?”
But doubt just keeps going. It eats at you until you stop doing what you wanted to do—or until the very thing you feared finally comes true.
My best suggestion for managing doubt is to remind yourself:
I know who I am.
Knowing who you are creates a stronger center. It builds confidence in yourself and in your inner guidance.
That is where the magic is: believing in your inner guidance so deeply that you can navigate jealousy or doubt or anything else that comes your way!
