Today I watched episode 2 of I Love Lucy - Be a Pal from May 13, 1952. This episode was about Ricky ignoring Lucy and Lucy getting upset by it and trying to do what she could to get attention.
What I was reminded of was that these episodes and their themes are timeless. Timeless because the themes focus on stories that touch at the core of being human. We all want attention and love, and sometimes those we love inadvertently ignore us. In the episode Ricky ignores Lucy as he reads the paper. How many times are we on our phone and ignore the person in front of us? How many times do we give our attention to something that we shouldn’t when someone important is right in front of us?
In the episode it was so hilarious - Lucy had to literally light the newspaper on fire for Ricky to notice her. He’s so engrossed in his world - he doesn’t see anything else. It made me wonder what am I not paying attention to that I need to? What is on fire and screaming at me that I need to look at in my life? I am going to need to think about that one…I wonder.
